Public storytelling guide

Your practical goal is to host a storytelling event that showcases the stories of people with IDD in your community. You can alter the plan, but we suggest five storytellers and in-person workshops and show.

Find a place to hold your event.

Use your newsroom’s resources if possible and practical. Your newsroom may have event space, or even a conference room that could be a convenient venue. If this is not an option, take a look around your community.

Potential places to perform:

  • Community centers
  • Bars
  • Bookstores
  • Performing space at a day program

Whichever venue you choose, make sure that it is ADA accessible.

If you have a live DJ or tabling, make sure to have enough space for those extra add ons.

Ask these questions to help you choose your venue:

  • Capacity

    • Theater style or tables?
    • Is there room for a riser for filming?
    • Where can the production team set up?

  • Accessibility

    • Is the space ADA compliant?
    • Easy to get to on public transit? Good parking?

  • AV Infrastructure

    • Is there a sound board?
    • Do they provide mics?
    • What is the lighting like?
    • How is the Wi-Fi for livestream or video playback?

  • Community Relevance

    • Does the space signal something about the story or community being served?
    • Is the space welcoming and/or neutral (eg: a brewery might only attract or be comfortable for some people.)

  • Cost & Availability

    • Is there a discount for non-profits?
    • Are you able to set-up and rehearse the day before?
