Public storytelling guide

Your practical goal is to host a storytelling event that showcases the stories of people with IDD in your community. You can alter the plan, but we suggest five storytellers and in-person workshops and show.

Step 10

Design and print program.

A program is important for any performance and will give your audience information about the storytellers and what to expect. You can keep these programs simple. If your program has longer bios, or information about your newsroom, it would be useful to translate into plain language. We recommend Rebecca Monteleone as an option for plain language translating.

Make a zine to hand out at your event

If your storytelling event follows your reporting, you might want to create a zine that includes information about your storytellers (you could also include their stories) as well as your project and community resources. Here’s a 2023 zine, Love Is Always, created in conjunction with a live event regarding a project on community safety for people with IDD.

Here’s the zine in plain language (opens in a new tab)
